Biographical Text

Crystal Catherine Eastman was a lawyer, feminist and journalist who was considered a leader in the women's suffrage movement. She co-founded and co-edited the radical arts and politics magazine The Liberator with her brother, Max Eastman. Eastman was a co-founder of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the National Woman's Party, and the American Civil Liberties Union. She graduated from Vassar College in 1903 and received an M.A. in sociology from Columbia University in 1904. She received her law degree from New York University Law School in 1907, graduating second in her class. Her career started when she was hired by Paul Kellogg to investigate labor conditions for The Pittsburgh Survey sponsored by the Russell Sage Foundation. Her report, titled Work Accidents and the Law, led to the creation of the first workers' compensation law. In 1912, Eastman managed the Wisconsin suffrage campaign, though it was unsuccessful. In 1913 she returned to the East Coast and joined Alice Paul, Lucy Burns, and others to found the Congressional Union, which later became the National Woman's Party. She was also one of the writers of the Equal Rights Amendment. When the National Civil Liberties Bureau (which Eastman helped found) became the American Civil Liberties Union, Eastman worked as its attorney-in-charge.

Eastman was married briefly to Wallace J. Benedict before divorcing him. In 1916 she married the British editor and activist Walter Fuller, and they worked together as activists until he returned to England in 1922 Eastman died in 1928 of nephritis.

Eastman worked together with Jane Addams on various parts of the suffrage movement. Both Addams and Eastman were founders of the Woman's Peace Party. The pair corresponded often and gave speeches together.
