My dear Mrs. Benedict: --

I felt quite embarrassed that I was not allowed to pay my hotel bill this morning. You know, it was entirely my own fault that I omitted to bring Mrs. Peckham's address with me.

The bill should amount to about seven dollars as I had a very expensive room last night which I am sure no "Committee" would think of allowing. I am sending you a check for ten dollars, seven for the hotel and three which I whispered to Miss Safford I would give last night to make up the $200 as it seemed to me we were pressing the matter of the collection rather hard. I do hope the difficulty with Miss Wagner has blown over as it deserves!

Sincerely yours,

Jane Addams. [signed]
