Biographical Text

Edith Abbott was a social worker, economist, and educator who graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1901 and got a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago. In 1908, she became the associate director of the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy. In 1924, she was named dean of the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration, a position she held until her retirement in 1942.

Abbott authored studies on the treatment of criminals, prisons, crime, and immigration. She was a member of the Wickersham Commission, which studied immigration, advised the International Labour Office of the League of Nations, and advocated for federal relief during the Depression. She served as president of the American Association of Schools of Social Work and was president of the National Conference of Social Work.

Abbot was the older sister of Grace Abbott.
