Beloved J. A.
Thank you for your letter of May 13th. My train will arrive at 9:30 A.M. railroad time, and I will repair to H.H. straightway.
I am loaded to talk all day, but I have to leave for San Francisco Monday May 18th at 8:10 P.M. railroad time. I am afraid I have burdened Edith Abbott by suggesting that if the white folks won’t listen at her institution, I am always charmed to speak to the Colored. When I am not with her I forget how her Quaker conscience gnaws at her vitals, so I offered these burdensome opportunities. If she communicates with you, don’t let her wear herself out for my one day.
I saw Lillian at seven o’clock last evening ↑for the first time.↓. She had sat up a few minutes in a chair, and with her usual exuberance tried to conceal the fatigue that her face clearly showed. Her hemoglobin had come up again, and though they think there may still be some unwelcome guests in the large intestine she is doing amazingly well. I could hardly believe my ears, her voice was so good.
