Dearest Miss Addams,
I was so sorry not to see you and hear you when you were out today. I wanted to thank you for reading my long statement. But I should like so much to see you and speak with you about that and some other things.
Mrs. Kohn has spoken to me about that Legion business and I feel very strongly that nothing but a libel suit will stop those people. Mrs. Kohn tells me that Mrs. Rufus Dawes has been also publicly quoting Mr. Watkins and I think you or ↑the↓ Hull-House Trustees really ought to bring a libel suit against her as well as against Watkins. There is so absolutely no excuse for the [page 2] kind of talk now. During the war when exaggeration ran ran high no one the weighed words very carefully. But the ↑it↓ it is simply too despicable for people of this sort to go on repeating these gross slanders. It seems to me like the case when T. R. finally sued that editor for calling him a drunkard. It is the only way to stop this kind of irresponsible lying. Mrs. Kohn said Mr. Packard had said he would bring suit and I do hope you will let him. There will be some very sober thinking instead of wild talking in the future. I do beg you to let Mr. Packard take whatever legal action he thinks proper. You couldn't have a better lawyer and once you begin a libel or slander suit, this kind of thing will very promptly stop. With most affectionate gratitude,
from yours devotedly E Abbott
