Biographical Text

Catharine Waugh McCulloch graduated from Rockford Seminary in 1882 and from Union College of Law in Chicago, in 1886, In 1900, McCulloch and her husband founded the law firm of McCulloch & McCulloch, located in Chicago. They specialized in estate settlement. In 1929, the lawyer couple published A Manual of the Law of Will Contests in Illinois. She had drafted a law that gave women equal guardianship with their husbands over their children and a law that raised the age of consent for girls from 14 to 16. McCulloch was the first woman to be elected Justice of the Peace in Evanston, Illinois, in 1907; and in 1917, she won an appointment as a master in chancery of the Cook County Superior Court.

Catharine married Frank H. McCulloch in 1890. They had four children together, Hugh, Frank, Catherine, and Hathorn.

McCulloch was a lawyer, but she was also an active prohibitionist and suffragist, who campaigned for laws that would give equal rights to women. She worked alongside Jane Addams to help organize for the National American Woman Suffrage Association. McCulloch was a legal adviser and vice president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and legal adviser for the National Women's Christian Temperance Union. A member of the National Association of Women Lawyers and trustee of Rockford College.
