Biographical Text

Aylmer Maude was an activist, writer, and translator. Maude was born in England but moved to Russia and lived with the British community there. In Russia, he became a director for the Anglo-Russian Carpet Company, though he disagreed with British business practices. He was a great admirer of Tolstoy and met him several times. In addition to translating many of his works, Maude was given permission by Tolstoy to write his biography. In 1897, he and his wife moved back to England, where they joined a Tolstoyan community called the Brotherhood Church, which was a Christian anarchist and pacifist community, run by John Kenworthy. The community ultimately failed and Maude blamed Kenworthy for his irresponsibility and autocratic way of running the community. Maude continued translating Tolstoy until his death in 1938.

Maude married Louise Maude in 1884.
