Biographical Text

Alvan Tufts Fuller was a wealthy American businessman, politician and philanthropist. Fuller owned an early and successful car dealership in Massachusetts, entering politics as a progressive Republican in 1916. He served as a state Representative from 1916-1917 and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1917. Fuller served as the Governor of Massachusetts from 1925 to 1929, and was known for conservative fiscal policies but some reform programs. He was a law and order governor who supported capital punishment. Faced with the powder keg of the Sacco and Vanzetti case, Fuller instituted a extensive review of evidence and refused to intervene. The decision cost him popular support and likely ended his political career as Republicans feared that his candidacy would alienate immigrant voters. He returned to the car business, serving as chairman of the board for Cadillac. He was an art collector and a supporter of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, local hospitals, and religious causes.

He married Viola Theresa Davenport in 1910 and the couple had four children, Alvin, Mary, Lydia and Peter,
