My dear Miss Addams,
I didn't send a telegram to add to your burden of congratulations, but I can't let the ↑event↓ pass in silence.
My son Lawrence has rather led the fight hereabouts against the petty witch hunters, yet, nothing has surprised me more than the extent as well as the depth of this hysteria. Now, if this should continue, a dinner in your honor might be well worth while. I have no doubt that we could get a hall full of the most substantial citizens of the community. Our two very popular Bishops, Pres. Lowell, Governor Fuller & such like.
The spook-mongers are now [pushing?] [page 2] my friend W. J. Burns as saying that he cites you & Florence Kelley as the two most dangerous women in the country.
This is possible, but I am going to see him next week & find out if he has turned into such a crook as that.
I enclose Lawrence's final letter -- The Herald "closing the discussion" & thus showing its sympathy on the right side.
Don't trouble to answer this, but let me write again in a month or so when we can better judge what the drift signifies. Two most striking letters from Beatrice Webb show her doubts about the socialism for which she has so long fought.
Yours from long ago -- J. G. Brooks
