Biographical Text

Charles Richard Crane was the eldest son of manufacturing mogul Richard T. Crane. Born, raised, and educated in Chicago, Crane worked in the family business there, serving as president of Crane Co. from 1912 to 1914. Crane was more than just an heir, he was a businessman who spent much of his time engaged in political affairs. His contributions to Woodrow Wilson's presidential campaign in 1912 earned him diplomatic appointments to Russia and the Paris Peace Conference. In 1920, Wilson appointed him U.S. Minister to China, and he held the post until July 1921. In 1925, he founded the Institute of Current World Affairs, which is still in operation today.

Crane was a generous philanthropist, supporting the arts and social reform causes, including Hull House. He was a patron of Slavic artist Alphonse Mucha, gave generously to the University of Chicago, and supported the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. In protest of Illinois' personal property tax, Crane left the state, preferring to reside in his homes in Massachusetts and in New York. He sold his interest in the Crane Co. for a reported $15 million. Crane was fascinated with Arab culture and nurtured a lifelong interest in the Middle East. He favored the independence of the Arab world and strongly opposed the creation of a Jewish State. As Hitler rose to power, Crane's extremely anti-Semitic views became more and more clear. Crane died in 1939 and so did not live to see Hitler's defeat nor the creation of the Jewish State of Israel.
