Dec. 10, 1904.

My Dear Mr. Paine:-

I have delayed replying to your letter in regard to the International Peace Conference because both Mr. Taylor and myself hoped to see one or two business men who might be willing to cooperate. We are much ashamed to be obliged to admit that there seems to be no one in Chicago answering to the names of the men from the other cities. Mr. Stanley McCormick is, I think, the most hopeful, although he at present is abroad and will not return until the late Spring.

We could, of course, send names of clergymen and philanthopists, but as I understand your letter, you want the names of business men. We deeply regret both for the delay and paucity of suggestion, I am

Faithfully yours,

Jane Addams [signed]

Mr. Robert Treat Paine,
6 Joy St.,
Boston.
