Biographical Text

Robert Morss Lovett was a Professor of English and Literature at Harvard and the University of Chicago. He attended Harvard University, graduating in 1892. From 1903 to 1920 he was the dean of the junior college at the University of Chicago. Lovett was also the author of a few novels and Cowards, a play. In 1917 he was editor of the Dial and in 1921 he became an associate editor for The New Republic. From 1939 to 1943, he was Government Secretary of the Virgin Islands and acting Governor from 1940 to 1941. In 1943, Lovett was charged by the Dies Committee for being a communist, and was barred from future federal employment. However, he denied that he was a communist, and his case was brought to the U.S. Supreme Court. Lovett won the case and received back pay, but did not get his job back.

Lovett married Ida Campbell Mott Smith in 1895. They had three children together. Lovett died in 1956.
