Emily Greene Balch to Jane Addams, February 1928

Dear J. A.

Madeleine is here with me and we are talking Geneva business. Alas, her father's eyes are worse and it is evidently quite dubious whether she is going to be able to get to the meeting. It makes me quake to think of going into these [complexities] without her.

If you have any clear decided view as to how a vacancy in the Ex. Com should be filled if one (or more) should recur before we have a chance to amend the [Constitution] [page 2] at the next congress I wish you wld let me (or Miss Sheepshanks) hear from you. at the Write me care Geneva office of course.

Suppose 5 of the Com. should decide to take a joy ride over the lake in an airplane and crash e.g. what should we do?

The answer is probably the old proverb about crossing bridges.

Of course if Larsen & Marshall will hang on there is only the vacancy caused by V. Gs death. I think I understand you think we should accept Miss Heymann's filling this vacancy but not very [page 3] happy that she should act alas as as Vice President not honorary but actual. [page 4]

I have a letter from Miss Heymann of which I presume you have a duplicate. It is not calculated to make the situation easier.
