Emily Greene Balch to Jane Addams, February 18, 1928

near midnight
Thursday

Very dear Jane,

I felt like a private who has received an accolade from his general when I got your last letter. You will never know what you mean to me.

We had our Haiti lunch today -- quite good [though] few there. Mr. Buell of the FPA just back from Haiti the best. Mr. [Knowles] who knows the problem on the spot also or rather [page 2] Santo Domingo -- the principle is the same. Paul Douglas, Mr Gannett & others. Senator King was to introduce his bill today.

M Z D came home with me afterward -- rather done up. The wound in her father's eye has reopened & she cannot tell when he will be able to start for Geneva with her but it will very probably be too late for [page 3] her to get to the meeting. I shall be just awfully sorry if she can't. We talked over everything and I am sending various notes and queries to you.

I am happy to say Dr. Sylvain has improved immensely and was able to start for Haiti Tuesday with his mother who came up to see about him. It is an unmeasurable relief not to go [page 4] and leave him ill here with all the responsibility on Grace Watson. She has been a brick and has raised money quietly among a few friends who had been at her house -- The [Masons?] & others which helped a lot.

I must say I am glad there is to be an interval of sea and desert before the strenuosities of pacifists at Geneva. This [page 5] last German snort answering the English one -- isn't it comic and tragic.

I am sorry to hear from Madeleine that you are apparently overindulging in dissipations such as speaking and other jobs. Excuse my impertinence -- it is because I am dead tired. But do please please be docile as far [page 6] as in [illegible] and not overdo so. It is unwise, surely? Or is it really and truly quite safe and desirable. You know Honolulu is "also another day" to say nothing of peripatetic pacifists striding through the Balkans next year.

Well I must [illegible] say good night & au revoir

Your devotee E G B [page 7]

Besides the stuff I sent to Tano Jōdai's exhibition I wrote to our nice Mrs Weyl & she is exerting herself as you see. You know she is our National Chairman of Publicity.
