Biographical Text

Sidney Webb was an author, activist, and historian. He became an office clerk at the age of sixteen while attending classes at the University of London. He later contributed to the Christian Socialist and taught at the London Working Men's College. Webb joined the socialist Fabian Society in 1885 and wrote pamphlets for the society. He served as Deptford for the London County Council for eighteen years, the Chairman of the Technical Instruction Committee, and the Minister of Public Education for London. Webb later served as the Chairman of the Labour Party National Executive and the President of the Board of Trade for the Labour Party in the House of Commons. He later became Secretary of State for the Colonies in the House of Lords. With his wife, Webb wrote books and worked on projects that focused on labor and government. Webb founded the London School of Economics with Beatrice and R.B. Haldane.

Webb married Beatrice Potter Webb in 1892. They had no children. Webb died in 1947.
