Biographical Text

Robert W. DeForest, born April 25, 1848, was a lawyer, philanthropist, and civic leader in New York City. He was the general counsel for the Central Railroad from 1874-1924, working from the DeForest Brothers law firm. He was a director in a number of firms, including the New York & Long Branch railroad, All-America Cables, and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. DeForest was active in many charitable organizations. He served as the president of the Charity Organization Society in New York from 1888 to 1931, and of the Welfare Council in New York City. He was the first Tenement House Commissioner, and a president of the National Conference for Charities and Correction. DeForest was the co-author, with Lawrence Veiller, of The Tenement House Problem. He became the President of the newly formed National Housing Association of New York in 1910. DeForest was also president of the American Red Cross, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1913-1931). DeForest and his wife built the American wing of the Museum.

He married Emily Johnson in 1872. They had four children: Johnston, Henry, Ethel, and Frances. DeForest died in 1931 at age 83.
