Jane Addams to Auguste Zimmerman Kirchhoff, August 19, 1926

Frau A.Kirchhof,
Kurhaud
Masserberg,
Thüringer Wald.
August 19, 1926.

My dear Frau Kirchhof,

Your kind letter written from Thüringerwald reached me here and filled me with keen regret that I had been obliged to give up the German tour. I think Gertrud Baer has written you that I was seriously ill for several days in Torquay and the doctor insisted that if I remained in Europe at all I should have to do very little speaking and live the life of an invalid. This medical verdict was confirmed by a doctor whom we later saw in Paris, so that I have no choice in the matter but to carry out these instructions.

We cut down the lecture in Gland to two and I have given up speaking engagements in Zürich and Bern as well as those in Germany. Your letter made me realize once how great a care has been taken with all the arrangements and I am bitterly disappointed not to be able to carry out my part of the program.

We missed you very much at the Dublin Congress and I can only hope that something will bring you to Chicago again so that I shall have the great pleasure of a visit from you at Hull House.

I assure you once again of my appreciation of all your kindness on my behalf and with my deep regrets that I cannot come to Bremen, I am,
Affectionately yours,
