My dear Mr. White:
I am very sorry to seem to break a definite engagement, but I have just accepted an invitation from my friend, Miss Smith to go with her to the West Indies for the month of March. We will sail on March 1st and return March 31st.
Miss Smith has been ill and ordered to a warmer climate for that very bad month so that while I expect to enjoy the journey very much myself there are other elements in it which perhaps will justify my going.
I hope by giving you notice so long a time ahead that it will be possible to fill my place. As we sail Monday, March 1st I could be in New York Saturday, February 27th, and I will hold that date until [I] hear from you. I can easily understand it might be impossible to have the meeting on that date.
I am sending a copy of this letter to Mrs. Bernheim and apologize most sincerely to you both.
Faithfully yours,
