Dearest Jane,
The following letter speaks for itself but since I wrote it I have had a letter from you from Hull House which is very cheering to me. At first I did not think so much about that given your sore throat and as I reread my letter to you it struck me I was most confoundingly cavalier in regard to it. It was like my original lightminded way of taking it was borne out by later history.
Isn't it too dreadful poor Japan should have more conflagrant earthquakes. This largely wood built city is spotted with burnt areas, old and new and one realizes the more what it means.
Returning to my letter after this interjection I will only add that I look forward to receiving the fuller letter promised for later. We are starting for Bucharest by steamer to [Constanța] at 1 pm and I must close.
