Ellery Sedgwick was an editor for numerous magazines, including the Atlantic Monthly, the American Magazine, and Leslie's Monthly Magazine. He also authored The Life of Thomas Paine (1899). Sedgwick died in 1960.

Sedgwick married Mabel Cabot in 1904. They had four children; Ellery Jr., Cabot, Theodora, and Henrietta. Cabot died in 1937. He later married Marjorie Russell in 1939.
