Description

The United States Navy is the maritime branch of the United States armed forces, responsible for supporting America's naval fleet. It was founded to defend the United States against pirates and served to blockade Southern ports during the Civil War. It modernized in the early 20th century as steel ships replaced wooden ones. It played a pivotal role during World War I to protect shipping lines and transporting American soldiers to Europe. The construction of ships was limited after the war by the Naval Conference of 1921-22.
