[Miss] Jane [Addams],
Dear Friend,
I was very glad of the calling of the Womens Mass Meeting for Peace, and of the organization of a strong society in Washington with you as its head ↑for World Peace↓. I had been asked by a German Professor from Munich, by the Peace Society at Lausanne Switzerland & the English and French Peace Societies, to do this same thing, but had not influence enough, physical strength enough, or money enough to do it could only get a few paragraphs into the papers now and then, write to the committees on the Army & Navy of Senate and House & the Committees on Foreign Relations of Senate & House and some of our American Peace friends as well as European ones & "The Bureau" [page 2] from Philadelphia, New York, Chicago & San Francisco, all of which amounted to nothing concrete and tangible.
The dreadful European War must must cease soon for want of men, ammunitions and money to fight with, and food to feed their starving millions! When this time comes, as come it must, we should have already selected, appointed and organized, a strong Committee of the wisest, strongest and most influential men and women of this country and of Europe, to take hold of the tangled affairs of the now Belligerent nations which the war can never settle, and settle them in a manner just to every nation and party, and see that each one gets its own & no more. One article of The Hague protocol says "That on no account shall any warring nation appropriate to itself land acquired by conquest." If you wish to be put in communication [page 3] with any of the officers of these Peace Societies, either in this country or in Europe I can give you the names and addresses of the Officers of any Society with which you may wish to communicate, as I am in touch with all of the Peace Societies of the World.
I should ↑like↓ dozen copies of your platform, or as many as I can get to send to the active peace groups in Europe, to show them we are trying to do something.
Excuse me for taking so much of your time, but having spent all of my leisure time and money for the last 25 years upon the questions of War and Peace, I am very deeply interested.
Yours, with love & admiration
Belva A. Lockwood L.L.D.
