My dear Mr Prevey

I am very sorry that it was absolutely imperative for me to meet my engagement in Chicago this evening, and that I could not stay over another day in order to reach Lincoln.

Will you let me promise to [illegible] the next time I am in the vicinity and permit me to [explain?] my regret that the Chicago engagement made months ago, could not be put aside. With all good wishes I am faithfully yours
