Biographical Text

Laura Dainty Pelham, was the director of Chicago's Hull-House Players. Prior to being involved in theater, she was a teacher in Chicago, who taught using songs and plays. In 1871 she started a professional career performing dramatic readings, gaining acclaim as she toured the Chautauqua circuit, and by 1879 she was a featured performer for Redpath Lyceum Bureau. In 1875 she began acting in plays. By 1897 Pelham had contacted Jane Addams, and by 1899 she was vice president of the Hull-House Woman's Club. She became the president of the club and the director of the Hull-House Dramatic Association in 1900. Pelham used naturalism in the plays at Hull-House, choosing plays that had social reform messages. By 1915 she took the Hull-House Players to perform in Ireland, and afterwards she led a literary tour through Europe before returning to Hull-House.

Pelham married Albert H. Dainty in 1880. They had one daughter, Louise. Three years after their marriage they separated.In 1892, she married Fred Pelham. In 1904, Pelham renounced her marriage. Pelham died from Bright's Disease in 1924
