On board R.M.S. "ADRIATIC."
March 1st 1913
Dear Sister Clara
I am sorry for my stupid mistake about the train, so that I didn't see you again. We trusted the baggage man too completely!
This is our tenth day out about half of the days have been rather "nasty," and yet [through] sheer length of time and coming back to the ship after [page 2] days ashore -- [one] does [develop] a sort of affection for her which I never thought I should possess for a boat.
I am attempting my first writing this morning and find it a little difficult [although] I have been able to read for the last few days and am growing quite learned about Egypt and that is more to the purpose [very?] [anxious] to see it. The [illegible] [page 3] [some letters?] to [illegible] and [we mean] to understand the strange old place as best we can in a month.
My heart turns very touchingly to old H.H. and to those who dwell therein. You have been so good to me all winter. I am sure you know how grateful I am. We are expecting our first letters soon & we were absurdly relieved to have Mrs Bowen's cable.
My love to you always, [yours] J. Addams
