My dear Miss Addams:
At the time of the wonderful Memorial Dinner given in your honor at Chicago, I was laid up with the grippe in Pittsburgh, and I feel real regret that my intended letter of greetings and homage should not have been sent to you on the proper date. But though a number of days have passed, I want to add my tribute to the countless messages which I know went to you.
I wish you could realize what your life means to each one of us who know and love you. Your consecration to high ideals, your sympathetic devotion to persons struggling in both mind and body, your wise leadership of great movements for world betterment are all gathered into a beacon light which leads each one of us forward and upward. The gratitude which is in our hearts cannot find proper expression in words but only in the endeavor to do our own little part of the world's work better day by day.
May God bless you and make His light to shine upon you!
Yours faithfully,
