My dear Dr. Maddox;

As I am still convalescing from my illness of last Summer, I am not at present living at Hull-House. The four boxes of books were therefore sent without my supervision, and I am not sure how much of the expressage was prepaid. May I ask you to send a bill for all the expenses concerned, that I may remit a check. A small parcel containing Charles Booth’s “Life and Labor of the People” is to follow.

I may be in California in February, I think it better therefore not to accept your kind invitation for Charter Day.

Faithfully yours,
Jane Addams. [signed]
