Chicago, April 25.

12 WEST WALTON PLACE

Dearest L. D. W.

I am glad your medical attendants are for "observation" though I hate to have you in the hospital for extra days -- knowing that you do not share my enthusiasm for the quiet and sheltered life of a hospital room.

It irks me a good deal to [page 2] be so far from your retreat, but as I am still puffing and wheezing and coughing my head off I suppose I am more of a menace than a comfort to my "dear ones."

Miss McDowell's letter was too touching and I am so glad you sent it.

All goes well with us. J. A. is rather submerged by the accumulation of things at [page 3] H.H. but is fairly meek under Dr. Herrick's guidance. I am scratched from head to toe for "protein tests" with the result that I must henceforth be clothed in linen and paper with a minimum of wool. Silk, cotton and wool ↑furs↓ are clearly not for me. I am inclined to trust in Providence and let nature do its worst [page 4] through Dr. Koessler daily mutters "what for do you make all these expensive tests and then do nothing?"

It is as hot as pepper here -- much like our warmest Mexican days.

Eleanor is slaving over her new Cantata -- to be given with Miss Nancrede's pictures next week. It promises to be quite lovely. L. de K B. is [page 5] knee deep in the "Women's World's Fair." Everyone has asked eagerly for you and everyone sends much love to you. Polly weeps over your Mexican sufferings and declines to give her consent to any operation. You certainly have her deep devotion. She considers you and J. A. the best and noblest of earth though [page 6] so unfortunate as to have been born outside the church. I am scribbling all this nonsense in the assumption that they may be entertaining you in the hospital for a week or two before the operation. I hope that horrid cough has left you.

With all my love and with constant thought of [page 7] you

I'm Your devoted old

M R S.
