Biographical Text

Edith de Nancrede was a resident of Hull-House that was involved in the theater and art programs. Before coming to Hull-House, she extensively traveled Europe and learned how to paint. In 1898 she moved into Hull-House and became a leader of its Boys Club. She taught art classes at some of the North Shore private schools and the University School for Girls. She later realized her love for theatrical art, creating a network of dramatic social clubs, such as the Marionettes, the Ballarinos, the Merry-Go-Rounds, and the Migonettes. De Nancrede also taught dance classes every Saturday at Hull-House and founded and directed the Hull House Actors' Guild. De Nancrede died of pneumonia in 1936.
