THOMAS JEFFERSON CENTENNIAL ELECTION
CHICAGO HEADQUARTERS
ROOM 906 -- 14 WEST WASHINGTON STREET
April 22nd, 1926.
Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House,
Polk & [Halsted],
Chicago, Ill.

My dear Miss Addams: --

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation has urged me to become honorary chairman of the Jefferson Centennial Election Committee in Chicago, and it would please me very much if you will serve as a member of that committee. Trained campaign directors will conduct the details and absolutely no work will be asked of you.

The purpose of the movement is to free of debt, perpetuate and endow the home of Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, in time for the 150th anniversary of the signing of the great document.

Many other important cities have already contributed, or plan to take part in this undertaking, and I know you feel as I do when I say that Chicago and its environs should not be lax in its patriotic duty.

From the enclosed circular you will learn that the plan of campaign is rather unique, carrying with it through six weeks of daily publicity a great amount of patriotic education. You will also note that men and women of national importance, irrespective of political affiliations, are back of this movement.

Will you be gracious enough to let me enroll your name as a member of the Chicago committee? I assure you that your acceptance entails no obligation other than the prestige which such a name of yours always insures, and the privilege of asking advice if necessity should require it.

Very truly yours,
William E. Dever [signed]
Honorary Chairman.
