Biographical Text

William E. Dever was a leather tanner who moved to Chicago, eventually becoming an Alderman. He was the Mayor of Chicago throughout much of the unstable Prohibition period. Dever personally disagreed with the 18th Amendment but enforced it while attempting to minimize the damage from the gangsters, such as Al Capone. Afterward, he was Vice President and Trust Officer of the Bank of America. Dever died of cancer in 1929.

Dever married Katherine Conway Dever in 1887. They had two sons.
