Biographical Text

George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright whose plays greatly influenced politics, culture, and Western theater. Some of his major plays are Man and Superman, Pygmalion, and Saint Joan. In 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was a member of the Fabian Society, for which he wrote pamphlets. Shaw sought realism when writing his plays, and he used his plays to share his political, social, and religious ideas. Although, he held some controversial beliefs, such as the promotion of eugenics and alphabet reform, condemnation of vaccination and organized religion, and admiration of Mussolini and Stalin.

Shaw married Charlotte Payne-Townshend in 1898. Shaw died in 1950.
