Dear Miss Addams --

I am very sorry to have to tell you that neither Miss Courtney nor I will be able to come to America to the W.I.L. Congress after all. Miss Courtney has not been well this winter & after having treatment for her heart & getting it better she got an increase of pelvic symptoms which lead me to take her to Lady Barrett, one of our best [gynecologists], who advised an immediate operation for fibroids. This she has had today & she is getting on all right. It was all quite straightforward & there is [page 2] no cause for anxiety -- but of course it is well to take some months to recover completely.

I have been rather uncertain all along about coming as it is not easy to spare time or money & there are family reasons which make it difficult -- so I am giving it up too.

We are both disappointed & especially sorry to miss seeing you.

I do hope you are really better. I have not heard anything of you or of Miss Smith lately. Miss Pye & I often talk of you -- & wish we could visit Chicago again. Perhaps you will be in Europe this summer -- it will be delightful if you are.

With love from us all three

Yours very sincerely Hilda Clark

[written down left margin] We all send all our good wishes for the success of the Congress
