Biographical Text

Hugo Münsterberg studied at the University of Leipzig, where he became a research assistant under Wilhelm Wundt. In 1885, when he was twenty-two, Münsterberg received a Ph.D. in physiological psychology, and later he received a degree in medicine from the University of Heidelberg in 1887. Afterward, he lectured as a privatdocent at the University of Freiburg and began publishing books on psychology. In 1892 he became the chair of Harvard’s psychology lab, and in 1897 this became a permanent position. In 1898 he became the president of the American Psychological Association, and in 1908 he became president of the American Philosophical Association; he was also a member of the Washington Academy, of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, organizer and vice-president of the International Congress of Arts and Sciences at the Saint Louis World's Fair of 1904, vice-president of the International Psychological Congress in Paris in 1900, and vice-president of the International Philosophical Congress at Heidelberg in 1907. From 1910 to 1911, Münsterberg was an exchange professor from Harvard to the University of Berlin, where he founded the Amerika-Institut in Berlin.

Münsterberg married his distant cousin, Selma Oppler, in 1922. Münsterberg died unexpectedly while on a lecture platform in 1916.
