Biographical Text

Nicholas Murray Butler was a politician and educator. After graduating from Columbia College, later becoming Columbia University. He co-founded, with Grace Hoadley Dodge, the Horace Mann School. In 1902, Butler became president of Columbia University and stayed in that position until 1945. In the political arena, he was the vice presidential candidate of the William Howard Taft ticket for 1912 election. He attempted to run for president twice after that. In 1931, Butler was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Jane Addams. He received the award for his efforts in international law, specifically in helping the Briand-Kellogg Pact get signed.

Butler married Susanna Edwards Schuyler in 1887. Together they had one daughter, Sarah Schuyler Butler. After Susanna Schuyler's death in 1903, he remarried in 1907 to Kate La Montagne. Butler died in 1947.
