My dear Miss Van Winkle:
I have just returned from a brief absence from the city and find your letter of December fifth on my desk.
I am writing at once to say that it will be impossible for Miss Addams to furnish the receipts for her railroad tickets and Pullman reservations for the two trips to Hot Springs and to Denver. As she did not know that these would be required, they were not saved and at this time, of course, it is not possible to secure them. I very much hope that the lack of these documents will not delay the payment of the account very greatly. Miss Addams is, as you know, now in Florida filling an engagement for you in Jacksonville. You will understand that the account sent you does not cover all the expenses incurred in making these trips and if the payment is too long delayed, it means some embarrassment to Miss Addams.
I regret exceedingly that the transportation requests of which you speak were not sent Miss Addams, as the war tax amounts to quite a tidy little sum in the case of long trips such as the two out west.
I hope you will not feel that I am too urgent in stressing the hope that the payments may not be too long delayed. The work which Miss Addams is doing for the Department is done at no little sacrifice, a sacrifice which Miss Addams is making gladly, but details of this sort often cause unnecessary trouble. If I had understood the exact situation better, perhaps I could have helped, but situations of this sort develop [page 2] so unexpectedly and so quickly that the best we can do is to learn by experience. I hope I shall be able to do this.
