12th May: 1915.
My dear friend,
Gertrude Toynbee tells me that you are staying at St. Ermin's, but for so short a time that I am afraid there is no chance of my seeing you, much as I would like to do so. But I shall [hurry?] and get to the [page 2] Kingsway Hall meeting tomorrow night where perhaps I may just shake hands with you. That will be better than nothing!
I am so very glad to find you are still well and vigorous and well to the front in the peace fighting line. This accursed war [page 3] has [disorganized] men's and women's [judgment] to an appalling degree. I have had to leave two Peace [organizations] because the Executives are in [favor] of it -- one that [was] founded by an old friend Cremer (it is good for him that he is dead and out of it). The other that of which our friend Felix Moscheles is President. He is [page 4] now, alas, entirely gone over to the war side.
When you get back to America please give my love to all my friends there. You know them all. When this chaos is over I want to get to the States again.
