Biographical Text

Jean Margaret Gordon was born into a socially prominent family. She entered the field of social service after the death of her fiance. Seeking to remedy the harsh conditions of child labor, Gordon fought to pass two amendments to Louisiana's child labor law of 1886, once in 1896, and again in 1906. In 1905, she set her mind on the Milne Asylum for destitute orphan Girls, changing an orphan asylum into a center for mentally challenged girls. She became the first female factory inspector in 1906, a position she held until 1911. In 1919, the Alexander Milne Home for Girls was opened; Gordon served as its board president and supervisor of the home through the remainder of her life. Gordon died in 1931. Gordon was engaged to Edward Jennings. He later passed in 1888 before the two could wed.
