Gratitude should prevail continuously for the gift of life and some knowledge of the friends of the race. Your presence in Evansville comforted me and Mrs. Elliott, after a two week's visit, returned giving your address high praise.
If the nations unite to establish world peace with Russia now in the lead, may we not hope [page 2] for high leisure in which the individual may define "four hours ↑a day↓ of honest toil which would provide a comfortable competency for all."
Very recently (for the first time) I have read the life of "Robert Owen" by the (English) Joseph McCabe ↑1867↓ -- a monk at sixteen, a priest later, head of a school, resigned from the church in 1896 married in 1897. This vol. came out in 1920. (Robt Owen's Autobiography published in 1857 the year before he died & when he was 87 yrs old, has since come into my hands, but it is the McCabe view of Owen's life that prompts me to effort in behalf of greater recognition for the philanthropist.) [page 3] It is clear to me now that I have been holding some loose screws regarding primary education -- worth tightening -- and the terms Fundamentalism & Modernism in my thinking are supplanted by ideas covered by "Tradition" and Rationalism, verily "the earth moves & the mind opens."
I am acknowledging that circumstances have rewarded my faith -- and when I hear from McClurgs I hope to have McCabe's "Robt. Owen" forwarded to you.
