Biographical Text

John G. Shedd was a businessman and philanthropist in Chicago. His career began in 1871 when he worked as a stock clerk for Marshall Field. In 1901 he became the vice president of the company, later president. He was also a founding member of the Commercial Club of Chicago, and a major philanthropist, contributing to the construction of Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Shedd-Porter Memorial Library in New Hampshire.

Shedd married Mary Roanna Porter. They had two children together. Shedd died in 1926.
