Frank Yakich, 45, who fought a gun duel with police last week at his two room cottage at 6296 Sixty-eighth St. during which he was wounded in the right thigh, succumbed to pneumonia early yesterday at Emergency hospital.
A post mortem examination has been ordered for today by Coroner Henry Grundman to determine whether the pneumonia developed from the wound or from the effects of tear gas with which police filled the cottage.
Chief of Police Jacob G. Laubenheimer Jr. began a personal investigation into circumstances connected with the shooting.
Yakich, according to his statement to Capt. Harry McCrory of the detective bureau, said he believed the police officers were intruders and [therefore] fired at them. He was wounded by a shot fired by Motorcycle Policeman James Spurgin.
