My dear Miss Addams:
There are two of us here in Riverside who want very much to become associated with Hull House, if possible, next year. My friend has her B.A. degree, has taught school a year and, just now, is completing her fourth year as Girl Reserve Secretary. I have had two years of special college work, have had six years of secretarial experience and have also taught the Secretarial Course one year at Logan Academy, Logan, Utah. Last year I went to China under the Y.W.C.A., but had to return because I could not stand the climate in Shanghai. However, my health is splendid now and I am feeling better than I have in a long time. I am at present doing secretarial work for The Southern Sierras Power Company (a large power concern of Southern California), at the same time trying to do what little I can in the way of young people's work, etc. I am so anxious to get into social work, and my friend and I could make a change next fall, if the right positions were available.
My girl friend specialized in sociology at the University of Wisconsin, and is splendid in directing club activities for business or younger girls. She has also had experience directing physical activities, including gymnasium, swimming, hikes, etc. She has also directed plays, pantomimes, skits, etc., and is especially interested in that phase of her work here. Although I have done quite a bit of volunteer club work, I feel that I would be best suited to teach the Secretarial Course, or parts of it, Bible (as I had a year at The Biblical Seminary in New York), or English. In Shanghai, I taught English to a class of thirty Russian girls and enjoyed it immensely. I feel that, perhaps, I have a special talent along this line, next to my ability to teach shorthand and typewriting. However, I would be willing to take a secretarial position, if it would put me in touch with the work and lead up to a position with young people in the near future. [page 2]
If you would like references as to our character and ability, I would refer you to Rev. and Mrs. J. A. Van [Gorkom] at Moody Bible Institute. I knew them at The Biblical Seminary and, since that time, they have seen me working with young people and are well acquainted with my abilities as a Christian worker. They can also inform you as to the character and ability of my friend, Miss Faith T. Elliott, as they came to know her very well during the time I was in Shanghai last year. If you desire further references, I will be glad to furnish them upon request. For your information, Reverend Van [Gorkom] is a member of the faculty at Moody this year.
Thanking you for whatever consideration you may give my letter, and looking forward to hearing from you at your convenience, I am
Cordially yours,
