Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House,
Chicago, Ill.

My dear Miss Addams:

I am sending you enclosed a copy of a letter I have just written to Mr. Charles F. D. Belden, President of the American Library Association, relative to the opening of a segregated school at Hampton Institute for the training of colored librarians. This letter is self-explanatory.

We are also writing a letter to Mr. Frederick P. Keppel, President of the Carnegie Corporation, at 522 Fifth Avenue, New York City, to the same effect.

I am asking you to be good enough to write a letter to Mr. Belden and also one to Mr. Keppel if you feel so disposed and agree with us that there should not be established such a segregated school. As the plans have hitherto not been made public it will be necessary that such a letter be written at the earliest possible time in order to be effective.

Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Yours very sincerely,

Walter White [signed]
Assistant Secretary.
