WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM
My dear [Madeleine] Doty:
I hope you weren't disappointed about the inviting of other International Societies. In Europe apparently it means a certain amount of entertaining and it seemed to Balch, Ramondt and certainly to me that we would better try that another time, taking more pains about it ahead as we had with The Hague Conference in 1922 when it was a conference in which all of the organizations had an equal part. It is very difficult not to give them the floor if they are invited to come and it complicates the question of presiding very much. Of course we always have a few but I am very anxious to keep the Dublin Congress as close to our topic as we can and the other organizations always have their own pet themes. I am sure you would agree with me if you had had my experience in the chair!
I am so sorry about the "object" and have written down my position in regard to it as clearly as I can, use it or not as you think best. Emily Balch has sent in ↑$300. of↓ her pledge for the summer school but as I understand your cable I will bring it over with the rest. If that is not right, please cable the amount you want and I will send it along any time. Emily Balch and I both felt that the school ought to have one course with perhaps a little more "peace back-bone" and suggested by cable such an historic course by Senator La Fontaine, or by some man ↑already↓ in Geneva [page 2] which would of course be cheaper ↑& perhaps as well↓. I suppose that it would not be altogether a disaster if many of the lectures were in Geneva, some of them in our own library, if we would all live cheaply at Gland and commute. The Europeans, as you know do not arrange a school or congress too carefully in advance -- some of them, Yella Hertzka for instance, objected to the Chicago Summer School because it was "too much like a school" they like a looser arrangement than we usually have. I would not be worried with all of the resources Geneva affords.
The money is not going awfully well but we will surely have $5000. I think for both enterprises ↑combined↓ I am collecting a little for special things from special people, I hope to send at least $250. to Miss [Widegren], for her Baltic states.
The U.S.A. Section meeting was very good and genuine, the interview with the President a great success.
I am getting this off in a hurry but am always
↑devotedly Yours↓ Jane Addams [signed]
Please give my love to Miss Blake, I am sorry she has had such a hard time, I hope that the Europeans on the two committees are getting into action.
