Dear Miss Addams:
I am sending to all members of the Board of Survey Associates (with this identical letter), a copy of the statement on the Graphic I submitted at our meeting last week; recast in line with the action then taken. This is not, of course, suitable for outside use, but will give you the general facts as to Graphic developments and plans, should you care to put the case for the extension of our Founders Fund before some possible contributor.
And we are eager to engage just that sort of collaboration on the part of members of the Board.
As we have no capital, it is essential to muster advance commitments in this way if we are to carry over this winter’s fresh momentum and make the most of the fall. We should, I believe, be mistreating our trust if we fail to raise $25,000 between now and the beginning of the new publishing year, October 1 next; and to set out to bring the first year’s fund to the required $40,000 by January 1. I ventured to point out in my statement that with decision on the part of the Board to go ahead would go responsibility for sharing actively in reaching these objectives.
There was hearty response on the part of those attending the meeting at which decision was made. I am attaching two sheets which show the status of the Founders Fund together with various undertakings to see people volunteered by those present, or suggested by those absent. Mrs. Pratt’s gift of $10,000 a year was the background of our four years fund, and this, of course, will not be repeated. Of the renewal, at least two other of our larger contributions are problematical. We must develop new sources. But, as I underscored in my statement, four years ago we had only a paper plan to put before people; now we have a living reality.
We could report pledges of $10,000 toward the first year at our meeting; half of this total being Mrs. Leach’s generous renewal for the new year. Any help that you can give during the next month with respect to past contributors to the Founders Fund will be ever so welcome; with respect to possible new contributors, doubly so. Will you send me word of any steps you feel you can take?
