Biographical Text

Louise Shanks Maude, along with her husband, was a translator of Tolstoy's works and worked to promote him as well as his ideals. Maude translated Tolstoy's fictional works while her husband translated his philosophical works. She was the founder and director of the store Shanks & Bolin, Magasin Anglais. In 1897, Maude and her husband moved from Russia to England where they joined the Fabian Society.

Maude married Aylmer Maude in 1884. Maude died in 1939.
