Biographical Text

Brand Whitlock was a Progressive politician in Ohio. He started his career working as a lawyer and a journalist in Chicago. His career in politics began in Toledo, Ohio, where he was elected mayor and served four consecutive terms. President Woodrow Wilson named Whitlock the United States Ambassador to Belgium in 1914. Whitlock also wrote eighteen novels over the course of his lifetime, most of which involved politics.

Whitlock married Susan Brainerd in 1892, though she died four months later. In 1895 he married Susan's sister, Nell Brainerd. Whitlock died in 1934.

Jane Addams and Whitlock corresponded frequently, discussing Whitlock visiting Hull-House and aiding Chicago's suffrage movement. Addams enjoyed Whitlock's book The Turn of the Balance and often stated that the residents of Hull-House would like to meet Whitlock and hear him speak.
