Biographical Text

James A. Tawney was a politician and lawyer. His father was a blacksmith, and Tawney was apprenticed to him when he was young. He then worked as a blacksmith and a machinist until 1881, when he began studying law at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. In 1882 he was admitted to the bar and started his own law practice in Winona, Minnesota. In 1890 he was elected to the Minnesota State Senate, and in 1893 he was elected as a Republican to the House of Representatives, where he served from 1893 to 1911. Tawney was also a member of the International Joint Commission from 1911 until 1919. He served as chairman of this commission from 1911 to 1914.

Tawney was married to Emma B. Newell. They had five children together: James Millard, John Ephriam, Maude Josephine, William Mitchell, and James A. Jr. Tawney died in 1919.
