Albion Woodbury Small was the founder of the first Department of Sociology in the United States, at the University of Chicago, in 1892. He graduated Colby College in 1876 and went on to study theology at the Andover Newton Theological School from 1876 to 1879, where he also worked in the school's Baptist ministry. Small also studied at the University of Leipzig and the University of Berlin from 1879 to 1881. Then, from 1888 to 1889, he studied history at Johns Hopkins University. Small also taught at Colby College, and from 1889 to 1892 he served as Colby's president. After founding the first sociology department, Small published the first sociology textbook with George E. Vincent and then founded the American Journal of Sociology. From 1905 to 1925 he served as the University of Chicago's Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature.

Small married Valeria von Massow in 1881. They had one child together. Small died in 1926.
