Biographical Text

Gabrielle Duchêne was a leading French feminist and pacifist. She was interested in building cross-class alliances between middle-class feminists and working women. As president of the labor section of the National Council of French Women (1913-1915), she worked with garment workers to secure higher wages and better conditions. Duchêne opposed World War I, and in 1915 shifted her activism towards pacifism. She attended the 1915 Hague Conference as the president of the French section of the International Committee of Women for Permanent Peace, founded in 1915. After the war, Duchêne founded the French section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and remained it's leader until her death. Duchêne began as a socialist, but by the early 1920s began to lean towards Soviet communism, though she never joined the Communist Party. After trips to the Soviet Union, she was more explicitly pro-Soviet in her pacifist writings. Duchêne was involved with several pactifist and anti-imperialist conferernces in 1930s, and worked with the World Committee Against War and the World Assembly of Women.

She married Achille Duchêne, a prosperous landscape architect, in 1871, and had one daughter, Suzanne-Henriette. Gabrielle Duchêne died in Switzerland in 1954.
